US Drone Kills Nine in Pakistan

A US drone attack on a militant compound in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal area killed nine people and injured three late Friday, security officials said.

The unmanned aircraft fired two missiles on the compound in Datta Khel village, some 35 kilometers east of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, near the Afghan border, they said.

“The US drone fired two missiles. At least nine militants have been killed and three injured,” a senior security official based in Peshawar told AFP, but provided no evidence for the claims they were fighters.

Two security officials in Miranshah confirmed the strike.

Datta Khel is considered a stronghold of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a Taliban commander who is accused of sending fighters across the border to fight NATO troops in Afghanistan.

A similar attack in the region on Sunday killed six people.

The Pakistani government has demanded that the US abandon its use of drones, declaring them a flagrant abuse of the country’s sovereignty.

The US has refused to do so and continues to carry out killings in many areas.
